  6. The 31st.

Tomorrow the Hasselblad Foundation will announce the 31st recipient of the Hasselblad Award. Check www.hasselbladfoundation.org after 11am CET (10am GMT) to see who the recipient is. I can’t believe it’s been a year since my placement and we secretly hung Sophie Calle as part of the exhibition The Hasselblad Award: 30 Years. Exciting times, has anyone got any guesses?

  7. Ground Glass.

So - for the last four weeks I’ve been in Sweden with only a radio, with very cheesy music, and a 5x4” camera for company. That’s why things have gone a bit quiet here, I’m very sorry about that! I was back in Sweden, again, to shoot for Mother’s Tongue. I’m back now and fly to India in two weeks to go back to the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad. Whilst I collect my thoughts and think about some blog posts, enjoy these random shots from the ground glass of the 5x4.

  8. This is one of the many reasons that Sweden is the place for photography, say hello to Fotografiska! With a 25 million pound refurbishment, with room for 5 shows running simultaneously, a soon to open commercial gallery space, over 40,000 visitors this summer and a workshop programme it’s a pretty incredible space. This plus the Hasselblad award giving £90,000 to the winner…London and the UK has a lot to catch up on!

  9. In Two Weeks.

In two weeks I’ll be shooting here again for Mother’s Tongue, keep a look out.

  10. And the winner is…

So finally I can tell you…Sophie Calle is this years recipient of the Hasselblad Award which makes her the 30th person to receive it. I’ve been busy here in Göteborg doing an internship with the Hasselblad Foundation which has mostly consisted of hanging the 30th anniversary show. There was a press conference this morning with the announcement, which is why I can finally share the news with you. There are a couple of videos up on the Hasselblad website explaining the choice and some more information on Calle so head here for a look:

The prize money has doubled this year, making it a total of 1 Million SEK (at todays exchange rate that’s about £93,000) which is three times that of the Deutsch Börse prize. It reinforces the significance of the award and even though the decision is made by a board and not by the people who work at Hasselblad, it’s still pretty important. Sophie Calle wasn’t even on my possible list of ‘photographers’ to win the prize, but I’m really pleased. It finally acknowledges the work of artists using photography and it can only mean good things for the future. Maybe it would have been nice for a younger photographer to have won the prize - to send a reassuring message to all of the young photographers out there - but at least it’s not just another master.

The show is up and open to the public, with a big opening tonight. I think my favorite part of the exhibition is the Becher’s only because I mounted, framed and hung them! There will be a big show and the presentation of the award in October as well as a Steidl book, so keep your eyes peeled (who would have thought a Steidl Sophie Calle book would ever happen!).
